Day 1 - Settling in

sunny 28 °C

After a smooth flight and an even smoother landing in Cairo ,we made our way through customs, met with our tour group. and had a 45 minute bus ride to the Barcelo Cairo Pyramid Hotel. Having landed at 5:30 am, our room was not ready so we spent the wait getting to know our traveling companions. Our rooms were available by 9:30 and we slept until noon. We decided to spend the remainder of the afternoon relaxing at the swimming pool, soaking up some sun in 28 C weather.

We decided to venture out to a restaurant - Safaray 2000 that was recommended by our guide for supper. Wow was it a great choice. A wonderful lentil soup was just the beginning. it was followed by one of the best Baba Ganough and pitas we have tasted. Our main course choices were Pasta Negresco for Judy and I had Carbonara pasta.

The evening was balmy so we wandered slowly back to the hotel drinking in the atmosphere. We had been warned not to cross the streets due to the traffic so we had to walk farther to an overhead walkway. Friday and Saturday are days off here so the streets were very busy with people, cars and taxis. They constantly beep their horns so it was very noisy.

Departing Soon

Final packing and planning

We've been planning this trip for a few months. Twelve days will take us to Cairo, Edfu, Kom Ombo, Aswan, Luxor and Alexandria. We are really looking forward to a five day, four night cruise on the Nile, a hot air balloon ride, sailing in a felucca to Kitchener's Island and exploring Luxor in a horse calesh. Three more sleeps and we will depart from Toronto on October 17 @12:45 pm
